Driveway or public road?
A suitable private driveway
The lorry still needs safe access and enough room. Check any shared access, ownership or other permission that affects your space.
Roads and public footways
Council permission covers the public road and can also affect footways, verges and other public routes. Do not block a pavement or assume a verge is private.
Apply before delivery
The council’s current roads guidance asks for an online application at least 10 working days before placement. This is a minimum notice period, not a promise of approval by a particular day.
Agree who will apply before booking. The permission must be granted before the skip is placed.
Keep the road safe
The permit sets the approved position and dates. Conditions include identifying the skip owner, reflective markings and suitable cones and lighting. Keep drainage, entrances and public access clear.
Parking restrictions may need separate arrangements. A permit is not a promise that a particular parking space is available. The council guidance requires filled roadside skips to be removed as soon as practicable, within two working days.
Read the council’s skip guidanceAgree who will apply
Tell us the exact address and where you want the skip placed. Agree the application, approved dates, any renewal and who will provide the required safety equipment. Do not assume a skip on wheels or a short collection is automatically permit-free.
Guidance checked 20 October 2026. The council’s older licence page gives different application instructions; follow the current roads guidance and confirm the process before booking.
